When someone is bleeding severely, the clock is shorter than most people expect. Life-threatening blood loss can happen in under five minutes. In most communities, that is less time than it takes for an ambulance to arrive.
That gap is not a failure of emergency services. It is a fact of distance and traffic. What fills it is whoever is already standing there.
Three skills, no medical background required
Stop the Bleed® training focuses on what actually works in those first minutes:
- Direct pressure — firm and sustained, and considerably harder than most people apply on instinct.
- Wound packing — using gauze or improvised material to fill a deep wound so pressure reaches the source of the bleeding.
- Tourniquets — placed high and tight on a limb, then tightened until the bleeding actually stops.
None of this requires a clinical background. It requires having done it once already, with your own hands, so the steps feel familiar when they matter.
Why we teach it in the community
EPECARE brings this training to schools, workplaces, faith groups, and neighborhood organizations across Boston and Greater Boston. The goal is not certification for its own sake. It is that on any given street, in any given building, someone nearby knows what to do.
Because preparedness should never begin after the emergency.
